The Head Turners Of 2016: Sushant Singh Rajput, Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan, Shabana Azmi

Despite solid competition in this category Sushant makes the cut for his obvious hard work and dedication to the role. At many points it was actually possible to forget that it was an actor and not Dhoni one was watching. The film too went on to do good business, always the icing on a competent performance cake.

Understated and underplayed, Alia Bhatt’s turn in Udta Punjab is a credit to an actor who is just a few films old. With no obvious reference points, this was a victory for the young actress and director Abhishek Chaubey.

We may not get to see more of the charismatic actor Fawad Khan and more’s the pity. Convention says that the actor who gets the girl is considered the lead for the sake of awards but it was Fawad’s vulnerability coupled with his sensitivity that gets him the award for best supporting actor in Kapoor & Sons.

Best Supporting Actress: Shabana Azmi in Neerja

Shabana’s role of Neerja’s mother, who stays strong in face of the grave danger her daughter is facing, is the sort of portrayal only a senior, exceptionally talented actress like Shabana Azmi could give.

Best Director: Ram Madhvani for Neerja

Edge of the seat drama, moments of cheer, tender soft recollections and brave, courageous moments in times of great tension, Neerja had them all.

Best Film: MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

The strength of M S Dhoni: The Untold Story was in the construction of the film by Neeraj Pandey who wrote and directed it. The way the milieu was set up, the attention paid to character actors who delivered wonderfully nuanced performances and the singularly layered portrayal by Sushant Singh Rajput, all were commendable. Even Rajput’s usually hesitant dialogue delivery was at perfect pitch here
